                Facts about Simple Sentences [S]

                Fact #6 [S]

The number of clauses in a sentence and the relationships between the clauses determine sentence type. In other words, the clause combination (IND + DEP) of a sentence is the essential factor to determine sentence type. Because a simple sentence has only one independent clause and never has any other clauses, the only clause combination that is possible for a simple sentence is 1+0. In other words, the number of independent clauses in a simple sentence can never be  greater than one, and the number of dependent clauses in a simple sentence is always zero. So, the only clause combination possible for a simple sentence is 1+0.
